(Cleveland) Bridge Project - Public Meeting August 24th

The Bridge Project Connectivity Plan
Friday, August 24th
Detroit-Superior Bridge
4.30-6.30pm

*From Fresh Water Cleveland:
How does the thought of riding your bike along the lower level of the Detroit-Superior Bridge sound? What about a nice jog or even a casual stroll with your favorite four-legged friend? Clevelanders will get that chance.

As part of the Bridge Project Connectivity Plan currently underway, a public opening of the lower level is planned for Friday, August 24th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. focused on addressing the specific needs of cyclists and pedestrians.

“The Detroit-Superior Bridge Connectivity Plan is a bit different from the usual public engagement process," explains David Jurca, Senior Urban Designer working at Kent State University's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative. "All of the public meetings for this planning project will be held on-site -- inside the bridge's lower level -- so people can experience the incredible space firsthand.”

Jurca also is a member of the design team working on the planning study.

“The event is scheduled between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. in order to attract bike and pedestrian commuters that cross over the Detroit-Superior Bridge, since they will be primary users of the bridge," Jurca adds. "So, our intention is to take the public meeting to where the people already will be and when they will be there.”

Stations will be set up at both entrances and along the span of the bridge to gather feedback on important issues for cyclists and pedestrians. Temporary "mock-ups" of different bike lane configurations will be installed for attendees to test and assess.

“Members of the public will have opportunities to test preliminary design ideas for the bridge, which will be embodied through temporary interventions," he says. "For example, we will use 660 yards of duct tape to mockup potential bike lane configurations along the lower level for visitors to test ride.”

“The on–site mockups are intended to make the engagement process experiential and fun, which ultimately provides the design team with more meaningful public feedback.”

If you don’t have a bicycle or are unable to bring it downtown that day, the Cleveland Bike Rack will offer free bike rentals on both ends of the bridge for attendees to use.

But is Friday rush hour the ideal time to host an event near the heart of downtown Cleveland?

“It's hard for most people to find time to attend an evening public meeting, so we want to make it easy for people to be part of the design process," Jurca says. "The chance to ride a bike through the space is a helpful incentive, too."

After the public opening on the bridge, attendees can venture next door to the Viaduct Lounge from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. for drinks, light appetizers and informal conversation.
